Tokyo Dawn Labs Releases TDR Nova Free Dynamic Equalizer

13

Tokyo Dawn Labs has introduced TDR Nova, a freeware parallel dynamic equalizer effect in VST/AU/AAX plugin formats for Windows and Mac OS based host applications.

Apparently, the latest Tokyo Dawn Labs freebie is based on the fantastic free Nova-67P equalizer which was actually selected as the #1 pick in our last year’s epic round-up of top freeware VST plugins. The old Nova-67P was developed as a KVR Developer Challenge entry by Vladislav Goncharov aka vladg/sound, who is now a member of the Tokyo Dawn Labs developer trio (joined by Bootsy from Variety Of Sound). We like to call these guys the freeware developer supergroup.

The brand new TDR Nova equalizer brings an improved set of features, packed in a much more refined user interface (although we were quite fond of the no-frills scientific look of the original Nova-67P plugin). TDR Nova sports a classic parametric equalizer layout, expanded with an elaborate dynamics section. The plugin is suitable for extremely precise and versatile dynamic processing of the audio material on the input, be it a full stereo mix or a single audio track. It can work well as your standard bread and butter parametric EQ, as well as a powerful dynamics processor with frequency selective compression and multi-band compression for mastering purposes.

Users who haven’t used dynamic equalizers in the past should definitely take a look at the provided user manual in PDF format, as it describes the basic concepts of dynamic EQ processing and explains how they apply to TDR Nova. The built-in spectrum analyzer and the excellent equal loudness functionality make TDR Nova an intuitive mixing and mastering equalizer for newcomers, as well as experienced users. The most impressive thing about TDR Nova is how easily it transforms from a simple parametric EQ into a super-precise dynamic equalizer.

Users who want more features should check out the commercial version of the plugin called TDR Nova GE (Gentleman’s Edition) that is priced at €40 and includes two additional frequency bands, steeper filters, a high quality processing mode and a couple of other tweaks and improvements. More info about both versions of TDR Nova is available on the product page linked below. If you’re looking for an alternative freeware dynamic EQ for Windows, check out the recently released DQ65 plugin by J1000.

TDR Nova is available for free download via Tokyo Dawn Labs (13 MB download size, ZIP archive or optional EXE installer, 32-bit & 64-bit VST/AU/AAX plugin formats for Windows & Mac OS).

  1. Very nice! I love these guys, Kotelnikov and Proximity are two frequently used plugs here and I’m sure this one is just as great as the others :) Thanks TDR!

Nova was already picked as the #1 freeware plugin of 2014 in our previous round-up. We’ll see if the new version manages to keep the throne in 2015! :)
