Attack is actually speed. The same is true for release, once the comressor is not attacking, it is immediately releasing. In the article it is also suggested the release only happens when the signal drops below the threshold. This is also incorrect, you can have a signal above threshold constantly and you would still get the attack and release states, obviously.

They should stay away as well from compressors with multiple algorithms allowing you to switch between FET, VCA and the other styles. Just get an 1176 emulation (FET) which is dead simple to use and it makes compression pretty obvious. Use it exclusively and use it on everything, then move to more subtle styles of compression when you start feeling confident about what you’re doing (probably after years), while still following the rule that “less is more”. BPB’s Dirty LA (optical style) shows this approach wonderfully.

I find that an article about compression should at least mention clippers and limiters as tools for specific scenarios when compression is not enough. For example clipping is basically a prerequisite for modern rock and metal drums, or for loud EDM mixes. It results in a sound that no compression trick can achieve. Anyway, I understand that this is a bit in depth and we’re talking compression after all. Maybe an article on clippers/limiters in the near future?
