Karoryfer Samples offer a FREE copy of Orcophony – A Medieval Sample Library (currently on sale for $69) for Plogue Sforzando to one lucky BPB reader this Halloween. The winner will be announced on November 2nd, 2022.

Orcophony is a sample library that focuses on medieval fantasy, with a host of authentically strange sounds. The library is compatible with the free Plogue Sforzando sampler.

Its got rare instruments like a tagelharpa, strakharpa, basy góralskie, Ibex horn, ophicleide, and much more!

Here’s a section-wise breakdown of what you get:

  • Vocals: Male Fx Vocal, Female Fx Vocal, Sung Female Vocal;
  • Strings: Guitar, Suka Biłgorajska, Strakharpa, Tagelharpa, Bass Tagelharpa, Basy Góralskie, Octave Mandolin, Detuned Double Bass;
  • Winds: Ibex Horn, Teutonic Bagpipes, Slavic Bagpipes, Bass Trombone In F, Ophicleide, Whistles;
  • Percussion: Drums, Cymbals, Earth, Metal, Body, Dumpster;
  • Layers: Combiharpa, Gobbotron, and Textures.

The library contains more than 13,000 samples and 7.6 GB of content, so you can easily customize the sound to your liking. There are multiple dynamics options as well.

This all runs inside the Sforzando Player (version 1.969 and above), and the GUI is clean and easy to navigate. You have simple knobs and sliders to adjust the settings on each instrument, and a unique ‘Goblinize’ parameter helps shake things up.

Here’s how the developer describes this library:

“A medieval-fantasy sample library for the goblin in you. Forget noble heroes and their brave deeds for a moment, this one’s for sneaky, backstabbing gits. 7.6 GB of content and over 13000 samples with unusual strings, winds, percussion, and vocals which get downright monstrous.”

With the range of vocals, choirs, FX, stringed instruments, and percussion instruments (which includes a dumpster, by the way!), you could easily create full medieval orchestras using this library.

Here’s a quick walkthrough of the library, so you can decide if this would fit your sound:

You can even find more demos on the developer’s YouTube channel, with some interesting compositions.

Karoryfer is not new to the sample library scene – they have a ton of free libraries that you could download and test yourself first.

They are currently running a site-wide Halloween sale. Orcophony is currently discounted, too. It goes for $69 instead of the regular $99 price tag.

So if you were looking to create some orc or goblin-inspired music, this sample library probably has everything you need! It’s got grit, attitude, and a range of unique medieval sounds to tinker with.
