HY-ESG Is A FREE Euclidean Sequencer Gate By HY-Plugins

Bedroom Producers Blog proudly releases HY-ESG, a freeware Euclidean sequencer gate developed by our friends at HY-Plugins.

HY-ESG is a gate sequencer (aka a trance gate effect) with a twist. It uses a Euclidean sequencer instead of the standard step sequencer seen in most other trance gate plugins. You’ll probably find that HY-ESG is more fun and inspiring to use than your current favorite gate sequencer effect.

But what does Euclid, an ancient Greek mathematician from mid-4th century BC, have to do with step sequencers and trance gates?

I asked myself the same question when Mr. Tadashi Suginomori, the DSP programming mastermind behind HY-Plugins, reached out and told me that the forthcoming HY-ESG plugin will be released for free on Bedroom Producers Blog.

Happy about the news, I was eager to learn more about Euclidean sequencers (because my knowledge at the time was non-existent). As per usual, the Internet provided all the answers in a matter of minutes.

A Quick Introduction to Euclidean Sequencers

The Euclidean algorithm is a mathematical method for finding the greatest common divisor of two numbers. It appears in Euclid’s Elements (a textbook from 300 BC) and is actually one of the oldest mathematical algorithms in everyday use.

More than two millennia later, Mr. Godfried Toussaint (1944 – 2019) discovered that the Euclidean algorithm can generate rhythms. He described the process in a paper titled “The Euclidean Algorithm Generates Traditional Musical Rhythms,” published in 2005.

Fast-forward to the age of VST plugins and Max for Live devices, and you won’t have a hard time finding quite a few musical sequencers that utilize this concept, including HY-Plugins’ very own HY-RPE2.

Another one of those plugins is the brand new HY-ESG gate sequencer by HY-Plugins.

A Quick Introduction to HY-ESG

HY-ESG is a freeware trance gate programmed by HY-Plugins, the developer behind popular VST plugins like HY-Poly and HY-TP2, to name just a couple. The effect is available for free download exclusively here at Bedroom Producers Blog.

At its core, HY-ESG is a gate sequencer. Its sequencer module controls the gate effect, which uses an ADSR envelope to modulate the volume. It can add rhythm and movement to static sounds.

To make things more interesting, HY-ESG substitutes the standard grid-based step sequencer with a Euclidean sequencer, unleashing the age-old rhythm-generating powers of ancient Greek mathematical algorithms in the comfort of your DAW. Πῦρ!

On a more serious note, let’s take a closer look at HY-ESG’s interface.

HY-ESG is a free gate sequencer by HY-Plugins.

Located on the left is the Euclidean sequencer module, controlled by the set of knobs on the right. The user can define the number of steps and pulses, as well as the sequence’s duration and direction. The sequence can be rotated, randomized, or restarted at any step.

The Gate section is where you’ll find the ADSR controls for the volume envelope. This is where you’ll adjust the shape of the triggered steps, making them snappier or duller. On the right, the user can change the output gain and adjust the mix knob.

The Modulation section is where things can get crazy, in the best of ways. HY-ESG offers three modulation sources, each capable of running in LFO or S&H modes. These can modulate the ADSR envelope, the mix knob, and yes, the sequencer controls, too.

Use one LFO to modulate the number of steps while another LFO modulates the pulses and the S&H generator controls the mix knob.

Say ἴθι χαίρων to monotonous sounds and Χαῖρε to ever-evolving complex rhythms that will spark a philosophical debate about the creative limitations and other negative implications of grid-based sequencers in modern-day music production software.

Back to being serious, HY-ESG is a unique, versatile, and easy to use gate plugin. Load it as an insert on an audio channel and explore the endless rhythmic effects it can create.

  1. Super!
TOMISLAV, Tadashi released 07.02 update v1.2.0 for HY-POLY with vector wave-table oscillator block. I think this deserves attention, because the possibilities and the sound of this synthesizer are becoming close to limitless.

Outstanding BPB! By the way, a little bit out of topic but, will Electrix BPB Edition be available again?
    Thanks in advance

  3. Can’t run on Mac OSX 10.10, probably needs of later OS :

“HY-ESG.pkg can’t be installed because its digital signature is invalid.
The package may have been corrupted or tampered with.
Get a new copy of the package and try again.”

  4. Great!!! Now I can make simpler Multiband Polyrhythmic Gate. Previously I used HatefishRhyGenerator and Envelover midi controled gate

  5. Same problem as Neytcev and Max:
“HY-ESG.pkg can’t be installed because its digital signature is invalid.
The package may have been corrupted or tampered with.
Get a new copy of the package and try again.”
    I have Mac OS X 10.11

  6. Thanks for sharing this, unfortunately I have an issue with downloading.
Tried to download a few times, but no mail arrived here. I used two different mail addresses, waited about 12 hours, checked spam mails, nothing. Each time I got a transaction id but no mail.

hello there ! I managed to install the plugin and my daw (reaper on windows ) recognized it , but it seems as the plugin doesn’t put out any signal to the channels.
it seems to work graphically & the gui is functioning correctly and synced to host , but it doesn’t seem to produce the midi signal to the chain . is there something I’m missing in the preferences or the setup ?

    thx

Hello, thanks for checking out HY-ESG! Well, the thing is… it’s not a MIDI plugin at all. It’s an audio effect (volume gate) with a built-in Euclidean sequencer. So, load it as an insert on an audio channel and play some sounds through it. I hope that helps! :)

  8. Yes ! Thanks a lot Tomislav ! That looks very fun. Thank you for all the job you do and thanks to your team.
    Have a nice day.

  9. Thanks very much Tomislav, BPB & HY for this kind offer.
It sounds very interesting in your video (on my phone), i look forward to using it later very loudly !.

  10. With respect to my last comment, I know there is dedicated “Downloads” section which is aimed to place everything at one location to download.

So, my suggestion is already implimented in other way. But, a reference to “Downloads” in “Free Plugins” page will still help to new visitors, I think.

Many thanks to Team BPB for great help to audio community.

  11. It’s a fantastic plugin. Unfortunately HY-ESG’s internal sequencer doesn’t start in sync with Logic. It’s not in sync even when I am starting at bar 1. The result always different and unpredictable which makes it really hard to use.

    Is it just me?
How do I get it run in sync.

    HY-ESG 1.0.2., Macos 10.14.6, Logic 10.5.1.

I cannot seem to be able to use any presets and I don’t know where the preset folder is installed by default. Where can I find this?

  15. DEAR BPB team ,

I think there’s a new updated version of ESG available in the HY repo , could you port that update pls
we are on 1.0.2 and the new one is 1.0.3 , Thanks

  16. It seems to be such a brilliant plugin. Unfortunately, I’ve got a massive problem with Logic x pro. After installing it, I cannot load it in into any of the midi fx slots. For some weird reason, Logic only lets me open it in the audio fx section, and if I do so, it doesn’t work – it cannot be routed to any synths for obvious reasons. Does anyone have the same problem? Is there any way to fix this? Would be incredibly grateful for some piece of advice. Cheers,Tom

  17. This plugin doesn’t appear to work, v 1.03 on Windows 10
Tried in 2 DAWs, including Ableton v11.2.11
Hy-ESG doesn’t allow the instrument track to pick the proper MIDI in, just “MIDI 1/ Pre or post FX” rather than “Hy-ESG/Hy-ESG.”
Hitting “play” on transport has no effect.
Successfully used Hy-RPE2 for comparison, which works properly

  18. Just wanted to say thank you! And jsut for your info, i did not subscribe to the newsletter when i got this free download but that’s because i check this site out several times a week anyway i swear! <3
