Developer discoDSP released Schroeder Reverb, a freeware reverb plugin based on early Schroeder reverberators.
Featuring only two controls – Decay and Mix – Schroeder is a plugin that is minimal, but also capable of exciting and unusual reverb sounds. The software is available in VST, VST3, and AU plugin formats for digital audio workstations on Windows, macOS, and Linux. The Windows compatibility was introduced in a recent update (the plugin was only available on macOS originally).
See also: Best FREE Reverb VST PluginsA Schroeder reverb consists of several all-pass filters, a bank of feedback comb filters running in parallel, and a mixer matrix. The all-pass filters provide high-density, pure-sounding echoes while the comb filters apply psycho-acoustically appropriate frequency response fluctuations. For example, a feedback comb filter can simulate a pair of parallel walls by setting each delay-line length of each comb filter to the number of samples it takes for a wave to propagate from one wall to the opposite and back.
discoDSP’s free Schroeder Reverb plugin is a very streamlined and minimalistic implementation of the original Schroeder reverberation model. Instead of confusing the user with a bunch of filters and a mixing matrix, you only get a pair of essential controls. The results can only be described as “modeled reverb” – a far cry sonically from the usual halls, chambers, and whatnot.
Still, I’m curious whether a version with everything going on behind the simple interface available for tweaking will be released eventually. For now, the Mac-based users can enjoy discoDSP’s freeware take on the Schroeder reverb concept. The download can be downloaded completely free of charge from the developer’s website, no sign-up required.

Yes, having a zillion knobs gets you were you want faster, I get it. It’s a one-trick pony, a basic implementation. Use it for what it is in your extra long fx chain that modern ITB DAWs allow you to. A delay before, maybe even another reverb after it to add another colour to its dark output.
